Subaru’s legendary Outback station wagon has flourished by imitating the trappings of SUV styling while still providing the utility and road manners of a traditional station wagon to succeed in a world that likes crossovers. Although its raised suspension and plastic body covering scream “active lifestyle,” it feels more like a vehicle when you’re driving it. Customers can choose a four-cylinder engine with or without a turbocharger; both come standard with all-wheel drive. To make loading and unloading simpler, a sturdy roof rack provides a convenient spot for bikes or a kayak without the extra-tall stance of an SUV. The 2022 Subaru outback premium formula has been so effective over the years that even luxury manufacturers have given it a go. The Audi A4 All road and the Volvo V60 Cross Country, two of the Outback’s closest competitors, have starting prices over $20,000 more than the Outback.

On our 200-mile, real-world highway fuel-economy test route, we tested an Outback with each of these engines, and they all produced an equal 28 mpg. In the same test, the sedan’s turbocharged four-cylinder achieved 34 mpg.

Two flat-four-cylinder engines are available for the Outback lineup: a 2.5-liter with 182 horsepower as standard and a 2.4-liter with 260 horsepower as an option. To reduce unpleasant engine drones, both connect to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that looks like an eight-speed gearbox. As is customary for Subaru, all Outbacks come standard with all-wheel drive (except for the rear-drive BRZ sports coupe). With the basic engine, the Outback we tested had average acceleration and sluggish gearbox action. The same stubborn gearbox hampered the turbocharged version, even though it was much faster.

However, most 2022 Subaru outback premium owners focus more on the ride quality and the vehicle’s capacity for modest off-road driving. The wagon has 8.7 inches of ground clearance and all-wheel drive, making it easy to travel through bad weather and muddy, rutted roads. For maximum all-terrain capability, choose the Wilderness model, which has 9.5 inches of ground clearance, a beefed-up suspension, skid plates to protect its underside, and a drive mode selector with Snow and Mud modes. The Outback’s handling is precise and simple on the highway, and its suspension offers a comfortable ride. Its lack of agility may disappoint WRX enthusiasts who convert to the more practical wagon. The base engine of the wagon is also capable of towing 2700 pounds, while the turbocharged model is capable of 3500.
